The birth of an entrepreneur

Ali’s entrepreneurial plans were hatched in the offices of a small New York City ad agency. She found herself frustrated at not being able to change and improve things, and her ideas fell on deaf ears. Then, in 1998 Ali made the decision that changed her life forever. She quit her job.  “I finally realized that I should be an entrepreneur! I was working in a tiny company and was doing everything from talking to clients, to servicing accounts, to getting coffee for people, and fixing the fax machine.  That was when I realized that I had the skills I needed to do this on my own.”

Without a mentor or coach to guide her, Ali immersed herself in books and courses on marketing, success, and prosperity. Using a hand-me-down computer gifted by her younger brother, she harnessed the power of online marketing to build her business. It appealed to her because it was low-cost, had a broad reach, and she could work from home.

Bouncing back from bottom

Although happy at being free from the chains of corporate America this was a difficult period for the budding entrepreneur. She was having trouble finding clients, didn’t know how to market herself, and was flat broke. “I remember one night going to the ATM. I was due to meet some friends for drinks and I couldn’t even take out a $20 bill, my balance was $18.56. I will never forget that. And I had to call them and cancel and go home. I had maxed out my credit cards. I had just been putting all I had into my little startup business.”

Ali hung in there. The thought of working again for someone else’s dollar was too painful to bear, and how she coped during this difficult time serves as a perfect illustration of how to find success if you really want it. “I trusted myself. This was my path. I listened to my heart and knew that this was what I was supposed to do.  Soon enough I figured it out.” And that’s when the business started to move in the right direction. Ali’s skill and proficiency at marketing her business via email newsletters or “ezines” earned her the title of the Ezine Queen, and she started to attract such prestigious clients as New York Times Digital, Adweek Magazines, Scholastic Books, and Dun & Bradstreet. But the best was yet to come.

The gamble pays off

The moment when Ali realized that her risks would be rewarded was when she created her first e-book titled “Boost Business With Your Own Ezine.” She posted it online and sent it to the small email list she had at the time. Scared stiff, she feared her clients might reject her because she was selling to them. So she took some time out and went to the gym. On her return she saw her inbox full of orders. It was her ‘eureka’ moment. “I’ll never forget that feeling, there were dozens of orders. And I realized, I’m not working! I had done the work, and now I’m getting paid, paid, paid. I thought, I want to do more of this! I was euphoric, and I said, ‘Well, I don’t want to work so hard for hours-for-dollars anymore. I want to do more of this passive income generation.’”

Since that day, Ali fast became a foremost authority in driving sales and marketing via e-mail publishing. Success has seen Ali and her businesses profiled in such prestigious publications as Entrepreneur Magazine’s Business Startups, Personal Success magazine (U.K.), Success for Women magazine, and the Sydney Morning Herald.  Her marketing advice has been featured in the books Small Businesses Give Big (2009, Alma Publishing), Birthing the Elephant: A Woman’s Go-for-It Guide to Starting and Growing a Successful Business (2008, Ten Speed Press), Mastering Online Marketing (2007, Entrepreneur Press), and The Official Get Rich Guide to Information Marketing (2007, Entrepreneur Press). And TV has caught on too. Ali has been a guest on various ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, and NBC morning shows around the country, and also on the HGTV network.

After several years of annual business coaching programs to thousands of members it was time to establish a club for entrepreneurship. In November of 2008 Millionaire Protégé Club®, Ali’s business coaching club launched. Here her passion for helping other women succeed has no boundaries.
